Sherri Winston, author of President of the Whole Fifth Grade, grew up in a small town on the West Michigan’s shore. She has two brothers and two sisters. As a kid, she spent loads of time in her grandparents’ backyard fantasizing about becoming an author.
The yard was encircled in tall
trees and plenty of arbor vitae. On windy afternoons, Winston imagined the swishing tree leaves were speaking, whispering their secrets—secrets she would then turn into stories.
After earning a journalism degree from Michigan State University, Winston spent the next several years working at a variety of newspapers. Her most memorable interview was with George Clooney; her most uplifting was with a mother who turned the tragedy of losing her daughter into a charitable foundation.
Winston’s ideas reflect her background, her wishes and dreams. She currently splits time
between Orlando and Charlotte, sharing a house with her daughter and an assortment of pets.
